Reach for the Stars in your LED Shoes!

Getting Started

Before you begin making the video that will rocket you to international social media stardom, there are a few things that you’re going to have to think about. As with anything in life, proper planning prevents poor performance—and we certainly don’t want poor performance. That’s why we’ve put together this short checklist that’ll get you ready to get the camera rolling!

1. Pick an Outlet

Before you start, you’ll want to work out which social sites you want to post the video to. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and The Vine are all good choices. Which medium you choose will determine how long the video is going to be, which shuffle groups you intend on sharing it with, and much more!

2. Music & Choreography

As with any dance video, you’ll need to choose your music and then choreograph your routine so that it fits the beat. At first, it may seem like a daunting task but after some practice, it’ll become second nature. Ultimately, it is your video and you have complete control—try different things, experiment, and have fun!

3. Outfit

The brilliant thing about shuffling and the EDM scene in general, is that it welcomes a whole host of fashion and styles. If you’re not entirely sure what’s in, check out our EDM Festival Fashion post—it’s a great place to get familiar with the culture’s trends.

Of course, you can’t forget your pair of HoverKicks, they’ll really help to draw in the views, likes, and shares!

4. Type of Camera

The most common method of capturing shuffling footage is via an iPhone; they’re conveniently sized and offer great video quality—and a lot of shufflers already own one so that’s a big bonus! What is truly brilliant about filming your shuffling on a iPhone is that there are video editing apps, such as iMovie and Pinnacle Studio, which allow you to easily edit your footage, add in sounds, title screens and more!

If you really want to get noticed, it might be worth investing in a decent camera—an entry-level DSLR would be ideal; especially if you get one that records in full HD—or even better, 4K!

Of course, part and parcel of this is finding somebody to operate the camera for you. A friend, family member or colleague would work. Just remember that if they’re not using a tripod or camera mount, they’ll need to be somebody with steady hands (it might be worth having them take a quick look at some of the methods the professionals use before you start).

Of course, whether you’re filming on an iPhone or a camera, you can always prop your hardware up. This allows you to shuffle in a distraction free environment and stay for as long as it takes—there’s no chance of your temporary camera operator getting bored and wanting to go home! If you see yourself regularly filming, it may even be worth making a simple DIY stand for your phone or camera.

5. Location

While the social media shuffling scene isn't too particular about location—they care much more about the shapes that are being cut—by choosing an amazing location, you can really get some extra brownie points. Heck, if you find the perfect location then you may just blow them away!

Of course, shuffling doesn’t require Hollywood-esque locations and bright lights. Your livingroom, garage, bedroom, yard, driveway, and school can all be used to good effect. In fact, these kinds of locations can sometimes add to the underground, EDM vibe that shufflers love!

For shuffling videos, your best bet is probably to find somewhere with an impressive yet neutral background. Something that really lets you, and your moves stand out and do all of the talking.

Before you Roll the Camera!

It’s nearly time to start filming but we’re not quite there; at least the preparation work is done! You have your music and routine down to a beat, you’re dressed to impress, you’ve picked your location, and your camera is ready to go. However, there’s still a few things you need to take into consideration before you hit record!

1. Lighting

When scouting your location, you should have already considered lighting. However, nothing is set in stone and the chances are the lighting will be different when you film. That’s why you should have a backup plan. Since you’re wearing LED shoes, you don’t want it to be too bright—that’d just take away from the effect!

Wait til the sun starts going down, or close a curtain, and you’ll get the full HoverKicks effect. The color and light will contrast perfectly with the slight darkness, which will really help to make your moves pop and your viewers smile!

2. Clear the Floor

Shuffling involves a lot of movement. Jumps, spins, and kicks are all a part of every routine. While HoverKicks’ LED shoes are functional, fashionable, and fun, they don’t have steel toes—the last thing you want to do is kick something hard and put yourself out of action!

Of course, you also don’t want your outtakes ending up on a “dancing fails” compilation, either…

Sadly, we can’t really help you with this bit.

Luckily, we don’t need to. The video is your creation, it is exactly what you want it to be—nothing more, nothing less. Push your boundaries, go absolutely crazy. Dance like nobody's watching and have a blast! Remember that you can retake as many times as the battery on your camera allows, bring a spare if you must!

Just remember one thing: hit record, every time. The one time you don’t, you may truly outdo yourself and you will have missed it!

Whew! You’ve planned, directed, and starred in your very own video—well done! As much as you want to celebrate, you’re not completely done (sorry). Have a rest and catch your breath, because it is time to put your footage through post-production.

Do note that while this phase is not strictly necessary for social shuffling videos, it can really improve the overall quality of your work and help the shapes you cut in your LED shoes to stand out from the crowd!

1. Review your Work

Sit back, unwind, and watch everything you just filmed. See which bits you loved, which bits you didn’t, and which bits you can improve on next time. Take a moment to appreciate the hard work that you’ve put into your video so far and you’ll reap the rewards the next time you set out to film yourself shuffling in LED shoes!

Once you’ve reviewed your footage, you’ll have a better understanding of what—if anything—needs to be done in terms of post-editing.

2. Video Editing

There’s free software out there, but none will give you the control and capability provided by dedicated video editing platforms. Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Apple Final Cut Pro are the big three—if you’re serious about creating viral shuffling content, you’ll probably be needing one of these!

To discuss everything that can be done with video editing software would take years. We’re sure you don’t have the time; you’ve got more videos to make! So, we’ve condensed this section into a list of ideas that you may wish to use on your very first LED shoe shuffling video!

  • Transitions
  • Text overlay
  • Color sharpening
  • Image smoothing
  • Adding credits

All of the items listed are fairly simple to get to grips with and may help to make your video stand out. After making a few videos and getting familiar with your editing software, you’ll soon be the Stanley Kubrick or JJ Abrams of creating videos of shuffling in LED shoes!

If you do choose to use your iPhone rather than a camera, you’re in luck when it comes to editing: you’ll be able to use one of the apps which we already listed and do absolutely everything that you need to from the comfort of your Apple phone!

The app store is chock full of interesting applications that you can edit your footage with, add in titles and transitions, and more. Some of the most popular options available are iMovie, Replay, Magisto—all of which offer their own unique features and work differently to one another, meaning that experimentation is the name of the game when it comes to finding your favorite option!

You can also use iTunes to find royalty free music to cut your shapes to.

3. Sound Editing

When dancing, timing is everything. While you may have made every single kick coincide with a beat, and every jump coincide with silence, your camera may have put your moves a little out of sync. Not to worry! Most video editing software, and some standalone programmes too, will help to get your video back in rhythm!
